US Ghost Adventures’ ghost walk through Austin is a haunting experience that thrills, chills, and educates! This carefully curated tour takes you through some of the most storied and eerie places in the city, each with its own ghostly past that makes it a must-see for believers and sceptics alike. Here’s why each stop stands out:
1. **Saint Mary’s Cathedral**
The majestic yet mysterious Saint Mary’s Cathedral hides a spine-chilling history behind its grand façade. Built in the 19th century, it’s rumoured to be haunted by the spirits of parishioners who sought solace here during turbulent times. Whispers of disembodied voices and flickering lights in the evening give credence to the stories of restless souls roaming the grounds, making it a captivating start to the ghost walk.
2. **The State Capitol**
The Texas State Capitol is not just a symbol of political power; it’s also the residence of lingering spirits. As one of the most iconic buildings in Texas, the Capitol has seen its fair share of drama and tragedy, from tragic construction accidents to mysterious deaths. Shadowy figures have been spotted by staff and visitors after hours, with some claiming they have seen a ghostly lawmaker pacing the halls. US Ghost Adventures brings these tales to life, offering a chilling glimpse into the hidden side of politics.
3. **Handle Bar (now known as The Cockfight)**
Formerly known as Handle Bar and now called The Cockfight, this lively establishment holds a sinister secret. Once a gathering place for rowdy patrons, it’s said to be haunted by a ghostly bartender who still serves drinks late at night – but only to those who dare to stay long enough to notice. The eerie creaks of the floorboards, unexplained temperature drops, and the sound of a glass shattering without cause all add to the atmosphere of a pub that may be more crowded with spirits than meets the eye.
4. **The Driskill Hotel**
No ghost walk in Austin is complete without a visit to The Driskill, often dubbed the most haunted building in the city. Built by Colonel Jesse Driskill in 1886, this luxurious hotel has a dark history, from the tragic tale of the “suicide brides” to the spirit of a little girl playing with a ball on the grand staircase. Guests often report seeing apparitions, hearing ghostly laughter, or feeling an unexplainable chill when walking the hallways. The US Ghost Adventures guide narrates these eerie encounters, leaving everyone in awe of this paranormal hotspot.
5. **The Omni Hotel Downtown**
With its towering presence, the Omni Hotel Downtown holds many secrets within its walls. This modern building was erected on a site that has long been tied to mysterious happenings. It’s said that ghosts from the past, including workers from earlier structures and even a few tragic souls who never checked out, now call the hotel their permanent residence. Mysterious footsteps, elevators moving on their own, and ghostly sightings in mirrors all combine to make this a chilling experience.
6. **Opposite the Paramount Theatre**
The last stop of the tour offers a unique twist, standing across from the iconic Paramount Theatre. While the theatre itself has a storied past, the real haunting is said to take place just outside, where several patrons and performers met their end in tragic accidents over the years. The ghosts of bygone vaudeville stars are said to wander the area, sometimes appearing to those waiting for a late-night show. The tour ends with tales of the spirits who never left the glamour of the stage, giving everyone goosebumps as they glance across the street at the glowing marquee.
We brought along the book **Glow in the Dark: A Streak of Light** for the ghost walk because Ruby, our brave Aura Girl, is always fighting Dark Beings from Shadowland from dimming her inner light and dulling her aura with dark signs! It felt right to step into her shoes for the night, exploring the haunted spots of Austin to see what dark signs we could spot (and whether we could withstand their wicked goal of dulling our light!).
If you want to know more about Ruby’s adventures battling darkness and keeping auras glowing, check out **@t.j.scripps_writes** on Instagram and TikTok! And a special shout-out to our fantastic tour guide, **Vincent Bernd**, whose storytelling skills brought each haunted location to life—making it feel like Ruby herself could appear at any moment!
