This carefully curated tour takes you through some of the most storied and eerie places in the city, each with its own ghostly past that makes it a must-see for believers and sceptics alike. Here’s why each stop stands out:
1. **Saint Mary’s Cathedral**
The majestic yet mysterious Saint Mary’s Cathedral hides a spine-chilling history behind its grand façade. Built in the 19th century, it’s rumoured to be haunted by the spirits of parishioners who sought solace here during turbulent times. Whispers of disembodied voices and flickering lights in the evening give credence to the stories of restless souls roaming the grounds, making it a captivating start to the ghost walk.
2. **The State Capitol**
The Texas State Capitol is not just a symbol of political power; it’s also the residence of lingering spirits. As one of the most iconic buildings in Texas, the Capitol has seen its fair share of drama and tragedy, from tragic construction accidents to mysterious deaths. Shadowy figures have been spotted by staff and visitors after hours, with some claiming they have seen a ghostly lawmaker pacing the halls. 3. **Handle Bar (now known as The Cockfight)**
Formerly known as Handle Bar and now called The Cockfight, this lively establishment holds a sinister secret. Once a gathering place for rowdy patrons, it’s said to be haunted by a ghostly bartender who still serves drinks late at night – but only to those who dare to stay long enough to notice. The eerie creaks of the floorboards, unexplained temperature drops, and the sound of a glass shattering without cause all add to the atmosphere of a pub that may be more crowded with spirits than meets the eye.
4. **The Driskill Hotel**
No ghost walk in Austin is complete without a visit to The Driskill, often dubbed the most haunted building in the city. Built by Colonel Jesse Driskill in 1886, this luxurious hotel has a dark history, from the tragic tale of the “suicide brides” to the spirit of a little girl playing with a ball on the grand staircase. Guests often report seeing apparitions, hearing ghostly laughter, or feeling an unexplainable chill when walking the hallways. It felt right to step into her shoes for the night, exploring the haunted spots of Austin to see what dark signs we could spot (and whether we could withstand their wicked goal of dulling our light!).
